Sinopharm COVID vaccine doses arrives in Sri Lanka

One million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine has arrived in Sri Lanka today.

This is the largest stock of vaccines purchased by Sri Lanka so far.

A stock of one million doses of the China-produced COVID-19 vaccine, Sinopharm arrived in Sri Lanka today. The consignment flown to the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and was handed over to the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC).

This is the largest consignment of vaccines purchased by Sri Lanka so far. On two previous occasions, the Chinese government provided 1.1 million doses of Sinopharm vaccines to Sri Lanka as a donation.

Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said the consignment will be distributed among 12 districts to administer the second dose to eligible persons and also to vaccinate residents in high-risk areas.

According to Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit statistics, the first dose of the AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine had been given to 925,242 individuals and the second dose of the same vaccine given to 343,805 persons.

The first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine has been given to 953,480 people after it was rolled out among Sri Lankan nationals on May 8. A total of 64,986 individuals have received the first dose of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the country reached 202,357 by yesterday and 1,696 COVID-related fatalities reported in the country since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile,166,132 persons have recovered and 34,569 persons are under medical care.
