Daya’s company can be penalised for breach of contract - Kiriella

Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy district MP Lakshman Kiriella yesterday said the government can claim damages from the company owned by former MP Daya Gamage for breach of contract in the construction of the Central Expressway.

The losses incurred to the government as a result of breach of contract by the company in question can be recovered from the company’s assets or the funds in the bank accounts of the company owner.

He said that the losses can be covered by acquiring the properties belonging to the company.

“When I was the Highways Minister,16 companies were given the contract of constructing the Central Expressway from Mirigama to Kurunegala which is 41 kilometers in length. He said the then government entered into agreements with these companies. “These agreements are so strong that any company breaching the agreements can be brought to book,” he said.

Kiriella was responding to a question over the recent Cabinet decision to terminate the contract agreement that the government had entered into with a construction company belonging to Daya Gamage.
