Assault on public servant: Hunt on for suspect

A special Police team has been deployed to arrest a suspect who had assaulted a female Development Officer attached to the Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat (DS) Office on Sunday.

The victim had been assaulted by a motorcyclist at the Hedigama area around 6.50 p.m. while she was heading home after distributing the Government’s Rs.5,000 dry ration packs to an isolated area in the DS division. Police investigations are going on and stern action will be taken against the perpetrator for assaulting a public servant,  who has been engaging in COVID-19 duties, said Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana.

In December 2020, a suspect from the Atulugama area was arrested by Police for spitting on a PHI during the COVID-19 duties and was sentenced to six-years Rigorous Imprisonment by the Court for violating quarantine regulations and obstructing the duties of a public servant,” the DIG added.
