‘Police to strictly enforce travel restriction regulations’

A total of 282 persons were arrested over offences related to face masks and social distancing within a 24-hour period from Thursday (13) to Friday morning (14),Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said 9,029 suspects had been arrested in connection with the same offences from October 30, 2020 to date. The highest number of suspects were arrested from the Colombo North Division, Kuliyapitiya, Matale and Trincomalee.

Further, a special operation was conducted in the Western Province from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. yesterday and 4,336 persons were checked by the Police and the health authorities and 36 arrests were made in relation to quarantine rules and regulation violations, including face mask and social distancing.

The DIG added that 1,596 persons who had violated the ID Card Number quarantine order had been warned by the Police, but the DIG said that such leniency would not be shown from Monday (17) and anyone violating the rule would be arrested and produced in court.

He further said 14 exit and entry points are being manned by the Police and the Police had set up road blocks. Over 2,000 vehicles had been checked along with 4,964 persons travelling in those vehicles.

Another 424 persons and 159 vehicles which were trying to travel despite the travel restrictions without any valid reason were also turned back and sent to their respective areas from the entry and exit points on the grounds of violating provincial travel restriction regulations.

He also said that during this weekend the Police will be implementing this special movement restriction order stringently and the DIG urged the public to support the efforts of the law enforcement authorities and health authorities by refraining from unnecessary travel.
