Private bus crew nabbed for transporting drugs

The driver and conductor of a private bus transporting 2,050 pills prescribed as pain killers packaged in the form of a gift parcel were arrested by a team of officers including the OIC of the Nochchiyagama Police yesterday (11th) evening.

Nochchiyagama Police said the detection was made when they interecepted a bus near the Nochchiyagama Police Station on the Puttalam-Anuradhapura Road.

According to information received, after inspecting three buses, the Police seized a stock of two types of drugs from the bus travelling from Colombo to Vavuniya, containing 2,050 tablets of 150 mg each in the parcel. Police stated that there were 1,050 large tablets and 1000 small tablets.

Police confirmed that one of the seized drugs was being sold by the smugglers for around Rs.150 each and that the stock of pills was being sold for over Rs.300,000. Police said that the drugs were supposed to be prescribed only for neuropathic pains.

The two suspects, residents of Wahamalgollewa and Norochcholai were to be produced before the Thambuththegama Magistrate’s Court yesterday (12th).
