Committee to look into incidents in Parliament

A Committee chaired by Deputy Speaker Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was appointed to look into the incidents that took place in the Parliament Chamber and its premises on April 21, 2021 and to recommend further steps to be taken.

The Committee appointed by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena is also responsible of recommending measures to be taken in order to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The Speaker announced in Parliament yesterday (23) that Ministers Chamal Rajapaksa, Keheliya Rambukwella, State Minister Susil Premajayantha, Parliamentarians Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Ranjith Madduma Bandara and M. A. Sumanthiran have been appointed as members of the Committee.

On April 21, the Parliamentary proceedings were adjourned for 10 minutes following the commotion over the issue of the initiation of the debate on the Report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate and inquire into as well as obtaining information pertaining to alleged political victimization against public officers, public servants, members of the Armed Forces and the Police during the period of January 08, 2015 to November 16, 2019. Although the media has been prevented from entering the press gallery, some Opposition MPs had released video footage of the tense situation to social media.
