Laws to curb fake news via new media

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted their consent for the joint proposal made by the Justice Minister and the Mass Media Minister to enact necessary laws against the spreading of fake statements and misleading assertions publicised through the Internet, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

The Minister was addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department. Minister Rambukwella said the new laws will apply to social media as well.

Various countries have already taken action to legislate to address this problem, he said.

“Measures should be taken to provide access to accurate information to citizens and civil society by introducing a new law to protect society from the harm caused by false propaganda on the internet,”he said. The Legal Draftsman has been tasked with drafting the Bill in this regard.
