Fourteen killed, mash-ups on E-ways on Avurudu Day

Fourteen individuals were killed due to motor accidents on the day of Sinhala and Tamil New Year (April 14), Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said.

Reportedly, 12 accidents had taken place on Expressways while 109 accidents were reported from other roads of the country. Seventy four persons have sustained injuries and 53 motorcycles and 30 three-wheelers were involved in most of these accidents, he added.

He further said that 758 drunk drivers were taken into custody on April 14 by the Police. He highlighted that the police bail is not granted for drunken drivers under any circumstances and apart from that the vehicles driven by drunken drivers will be released after produced before the relevant Magistrate’s Courts.
