Government has weakened country’s economy - UNP

The government has weakened the country’s economy and given poisonous food to the people as another epidemic when the corona epidemic strikes naturally, former Minister Vajira Abeywardena said.

He said that the inefficient and weak economic policy of the government has opened the door for the people of the country to devour poisonous foods.

Abeywardena expressed these views at a discussion held with a group of UNP activists at the Sirikotha party headquarters yesterday (11).

He said that due to the inefficient economic policy of the present government, businesses in this country have collapsed and all sources of income of the people have been lost. Due to this situation, the people of the country are not in a position to celebrate the New Year like in other years.

He also said that due to economic difficulties people tend to buy cheap goods.

Thus, they buy food less in quality and inferior or harmful goods. “Entrepreneurs also try to import cheap food items. It is a great pity that such food items have been provided to our people today” he added.

“Recently there was a huge shortage of turmeric in the country. But we saw the government destroying a large stock of turmeric in public.

Although turmeric was destroyed in this manner, we did not see that the coconut oil imported into the country with poison was destroyed. This government took action to re-export that coconut oil. It must be said that this is a very unfortunate situation” he said.

He said the policies of the UNP can only rebuild the country’s economy and create an era in which the people can live without economic hardship. The time has come for all parties to work together to bring to power a UNP government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe, he added.
