Opposition Leader raising baseless arguments - Dinesh

Pandemonium reigned in Parliament yesterday following Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa demanding to guarantee  the right of Ranjan Ramanayake to remain as an MP which later led to sittings being suspended for five minutes.

He raised the matter after Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena made a Speaker’s announcement to inform the correct position on the letter that was sent by the Secretary General of Parliament to the Elections Commission Chairman on the seat rendered vacant with the ceasing of Ranjan Ramanayake to be an MP in terms of Article 66(d) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

The Opposition Leader demanded that as Ranjan Ramanayake was in the course of appealing against the Court of Appeal decision on his membership in parliament, he should be given his due rights. “There seems to be a conspiracy to deprive him of his membership in Parliament. He queried if the Speaker would reverse his decision to vacate Ramanayake’s seat if the Supreme Court decided otherwise. He requested to ensure Ramanayake’s right to contest the Court of Appeal decision on his membership.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena observed that the Opposition leaders’ argument was baseless. The Secretary General of the Parliament had acted in accordance with the judgement and the constitution. He added that no person can question it as it is a duty of the Secretary General. The Speaker stated that Ramanayake’s right of appeal is still lying and instructed to challenge the Elections Commission’s decision if the Opposition thinks the measures taken were wrong rather than wasting time here.
