Umpires verdict paramount - MCC

While Quinton de Kock’s role in Fakhar Zaman’s run out continued to divide opinion, the MCC highlighted that the onus was on the umpires to determine if there was an ‘attempt to deceive’ the batsman.

The dismissal of Zaman became a big talking point after South Africa beat Pakistan in the second ODI at Johannesburg on Sunday.

Soon after the game, the MCC took to Twitter and pointed attention to Law 41.5.1 which states, “It is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball”.

MCC further added that the onus was on the umpires to determine whether there was ‘an attempt to deceive’ the batsman. But on this occasion, standing umpires Marais Erasmus and Allahudien Palekar didn’t see it that way.
