The Telecom Regulatory commission (TRC) will commence the 5G spectrum auction by the end of the year, TRC Director General, Oshada Senanayake said at an event where HUTCH for the first time demonstrated their 5G capabilities at One Galle Face Mall yesterday.

HUTCH teamed up with ZTE, a global leader in telecommunications and information technology for this groundbreaking 5G trial which included several demonstrations and use cases of 5G.

He said that the 5G trials were conducted last year and with the 5G auction the much awaited and long over due 5G roll out would commence towards the end of the year. He however said that he was disappointed to note that unlike during the launch of the 4Gnetwork where Sri Lanka was first in the region to implement it the country has lagged behind in the 5G deployment mainly due to less infrastructure being placed at the ‘right points’ during the last few years.

“However with the change of government and Digitalization top priority in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s manifesto ‘things’ are now shifting in the right direction.” He said that 5G will also help in several areas like Smart cities, driverless cars, Smart garbage collation, parking, traffic lights, health, education and several other initiatives.

Senanayake also said that Sri Lanka is among the top 10 countries offering lowest voice calls charges and this will further reduce next year taking Sri Lanka to the ninth position.

In addition Sri Lanka is also ranked 30th in the Mobile Broadband connectivity network this too will reduce to 29th soon.He also disclosed that the ‘Number Portability’ too would be a reality this year.

Commenting on the new milestone, HUTCH CEO, Thirukumar Nadarasa said, “This is indeed a special moment for all of us at HUTCH.

As a company that seeks to exceed the expectations of our valued customers, the new HUTCH network is 5G-ready, fostering a new era of technological transformation.”

HUTCH geared up for the 5G trial in a backdrop of having completed the Etisalat merger last year with an island wide 4G expansion which proved to be a watershed moment in HUTCH’s long cherished journey in Sri Lanka.

CK Hutchison has positioned itself as a key player in the global 5G drive for both mobile broadband as well as commercial purposes with advanced 5G networks already launched in Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Sweden & UK over the last two years, clearly demonstrating its commitment to advanced technology.
