Rs.10 mn worth medical equipment found at Borella warehouse

A stock of obsolete medical equipment worth nearly Rs. 10 million was found in a warehouse on Gothami Road in Borella yesterday (12) in a raid carried out by the Drug Regulatory Authority and the Police.

The raid was carried out on a tip off received from the Western Provincial Intelligence Division that a stock of expired medical equipment had been imported into the country.

The detection was made while the equipment was labeled for reuse.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a stock of unregistered medical equipment and chemicals were found at the location.

It was revealed that the medical equipment and chemicals had been brought to Sri Lanka without labels and then labeled and distributed to a number of private hospitals, earlier as well.

Chief Food and Drug Controller of the Drug Regulatory Authority Amit Perera said an investigation has been launched into the nature of the racket and the locations where the goods were distributed and that legal action would be taken in this regard.

He said that investigations have been initiated into how the expired medical equipment was imported and that errors in unhygienic storage have already been identified and necessary legal action will be taken.
