Former Selacine Chairman further remanded

Former Chairman of Selacine Television Institute Pradeep Udayakumara Edirisinghe was yesterday ordered to be further remanded till February 3 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Mohammad Mihal, in connection with the alleged misuse of Rs.12 million belonging to the Selacine Television Institute when he was the Chairman.

Delivering the order regarding the suspect’s bail application, the Magistrate refused to grant bail to the suspect and ordered that the suspect be further remanded since there are no sufficient facts to release the suspect on bail.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, the suspect was ordered to be released on a cash bail of Rs.25,000 and two sureties of Rs.500,000 as there are no sufficient grounds to refuse bail for the suspect.

The present Selacine Television Institute Chairman had lodged a complaint with the Financial Crimes Division (FCID) regarding this financial fraud. Following that, FCID had filed a 'B' reports against the suspect in the Colombo Magistrate’s Court alleging that he had committed financial fraud by crediting Rs.11,988,000.00 to the welfare account of the Selacine Television Institute during the period of 2010 -2015.

At a previous occasion, the court had issued an open warrant through Interpol for the arrest of former Chairman Pradeep Udayakumara Edirisinghe in connection with the case.

The suspect had earlier reported to the court that he would return to Sri Lanka and surrender to the CID after the Quarantine period was ended. Accordingly, the suspect was arrested on last January 20 and produced before the Court on January 21 and remanded till yesterday (22). The case will be taken up again on February 3.
