Mandatory training for youth still on hold - Minister

Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the government had still not decided on the mandatory military training for all over 18 years.

The Minister said that it was a proposal made by Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekara and a final decision has not been taken in this regard.

“But as a government, it is not wrong to consider the proposal since even highly democratic countries have already implemented this concept of mandatory military training for youth. Some highly democratic countries impose a punishment on youth who refuse to undergo the mandatory  military training,” the Minister said.

The Minister was responding to a question by a journalist at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department. Minister Rambukwella further stated that it was wrong to interpret this military training as militarization of the nation.
