Govt. to present draft for new Constitution before year end - Minister G.L.

The Government expects to present the draft for a new Constitution to Parliament before the end of this year, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said.

He was speaking to the media after meeting Ven. Kappetipola Sri Vimala Nayaka Thera in Kandy on Saturday.

He pointed out that a Committee headed by Romesh de Silva, PC has been appointed for the purpose, adding that the 1978 Constitution needs to undergo comprehensive changes to suit the contemporary times.

Commenting on reopening the schools, the Minister pointed out that it was a request by the majority, adding that pre-schools and Dhamma schools would also be re-opened as soon as possible.

He said all the school textbooks could be downloaded from the Internet, adding that school uniform materials would be given before the end of January.

The Minister also observed that admission of students to schools would be streamlined to prevent any injustice to parents. Commenting on University education, the Minister said the student intake has been increased from 30,000 to 41,500 this year.

He added that broadening employment opportunities is also important while increasing the student intake. He said that course modules are being updated to make the degree programmes more job oriented.

He said that a proper system would be made to admit students to the universities, so that there would not be any injustice to students who faced the A-L Examination from the old or new syllabus.
