TNA calls for hartal

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has called for a hartal in the North and the East today in protest of the demolition of a memorial at the Jaffna University.

A tense situation arose on Friday and Saturday opposite the Jaffna University after a monument in memory of those died in Mullavaikkal was demolished on the instruction of the University Management on Friday night. The Police controlled the situation to some extent following a discussion with the protesting students. However, the protest restarted after a few undergrads commenced a fast.

TNA Parliamentarians S Sridharan, M. A. Sumanthiran andIllankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi(ITAK) leader Mavai Senadhirajh, former Provincial Councillors M. K. Sivajilingam and Anandi Sasidharan had a discussion with the university students who were in the fast.

The University Management has informed the students that the monument was demolished to promote co-existence among the students.

The University Senate has informed the students that a decision has been made to demolish the memorial since it has become an impediment for the amity and coexistence among the students.
