Taxes on four essential commodities removed

Taking into consideration the difficulties faced by the people in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has taken a decision to exempt essential commodities such as dhal, sugar, tinned fish and big onions from taxes.

Issuing a statement the President’s Media Division stated that as a result of the tax exemption, a big tin of canned fish could be purchased at Rs. 200, a kg of big onions at Rs. 100 and a kg of sugar at Rs. 85.

Consumers purchasing items valued at over Rs. 500, including the above items, would be able to purchase a kg of dhal at Rs. 150.

The Coconut Development Board, Kurunegala Plantation Corporation and the Chilaw Plantation Company has increased the supply of coconuts to Colombo and as a result consumers would be able to purchase coconuts from Sathosa outlets at concessionary rates.
