National Surfing C’ships begins today at Arugambay

The National Surfing Championship will be held at the Arugambay beach on Saturday and Sunday.

The Championship is organised by Surfing Federation Sri Lanka with the co-operation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Lanka Sports Reizen headed by Thilak Weerasinghe who pioneered the water sports. Mobitel, the Official Telecommunications is the official partner for the event.

This year’s Championships will be conducted on a low key due to COVID-19 lockdown.

Nearly 30 foreign competitors will compete in the open event along with top sixteen surfers from the National Championship. A total of 50 locals are due to take part in the National Championship.

The preliminary round of the National Championship will be conducted on September 26 (Saturday) and the final scheduled for Sunday. In addition to these two events there will be a special event for juniors. This has been organised to give an opportunity for young surfers to gain experience and also to encourage them to be engaged with the sport in the future.

Sixteen local surfers are expected to compete in the open event along with foreign participants who will face stiff competition from them, but the local competitors will have to make good use of this opportunity take the maximum experience.
