Pujith was promised diplomatic post for owning up - Hemasiri

Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando testifying before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday Attacks said then President Maithripala Sirisena had informed then IGP Pujith Jayasundara that he would be given a diplomatic posting if he took responsibility for the Easter attack and resigned as IGP.

He also told the Commission that the former president had said that he would change the report of the Malalgoda committee that was first appointed to look into the attack and give him the post.

He told the Commission that he was aware that Director of State Intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena was constantly informing the former President about the attack prior to the Easter

attack, adding that he believed that he had also been informed about the foreign intelligence received regarding the attack.

He was testifying for the fourth time before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter attack.He said that every report that was given to him by the state intelligence service regarding the attack had no analysis and he added that instead of sending reports, the intelligence officers should write down the recommendations that should be made regarding the intelligence information.

“Every information that was sent to me was forwarded to the IGP” he said. He told the Commission such information was needed by the police, the CID and the Terrorism Suppression units and Investigation Divisions. He also added that analysed information must be given to him.
