Only sprats caught in Yahapalana corruption net - Mangala

Former Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera on Saturday said people have punished those who were in the Yahapalana government twice as they failed to deal with mass scale fraudsters.

He said that the former government wanted to catch those who were allegedly involved in mass scale corruption and financial malpractices though they dealt with those involved in petty corruption.

Samaraweera was testifying before the Commission on Saturday.

‘The former government succeeded in netting only sprats not sharks,” he said. Samaraweera when cross examined by the lawyers said that he was not aware of an Anti-Corruption Committee.

The former Finance Minister was inquired by the Commission as to why Rs. 7.5 million had been spent on the Anti-Corruption Committee and whether he does not think that it is an appropriation of public funds.

Samaraweera in reply said that he does not think that spending money on the committee is an appropriation of public funds.

Former Minister Rauff Hakeem, TNA Leader R. Sampanthan and MP Sarath Fonseka did not turn up at the Commission on Saturday and the Commission issued notices on them again.
