Mimosa plants invade reserves in Matale

Farmer organisations in the Matale District urge the Government to take immediate action to control the spread of mimosa plants in minor irrigation reserves since these plants cause a big threat to the agriculture in the district.

They said that over 50 per cent of minor irrigation reserves are now under mimosa plants.

Villagers remove the invasive plants using machineries. But their attempt was futile, they said.

They said that the tank reserves in the district are also affected posing a big threat to the rural areas.

A solid programme should be set up by the authorities immediately to eradicate the mimosa plants, they said.
