A large-scale soil excavation is carried out using heavy machinery in Thalgampola, Yakkalamulla in the Baddegama electorate in Galle. The issue was disclosed at the monthly meeting of the Yakkalamulla Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) this month.

The site in Kottawa rapidly dries up water springs now, Pradeshiya Sabha Members said.

Pradeshiya Sabha Member (SLPP) Chandima Gamage said that the soil excavation has been carried out for several months in Thalgampola under a permit issued by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau. People of the area accused the PS and the Divisional Secretariat of not looking into the matter and of being indifferent to the digging. About 25 lorry loads of soils are taken away using excavators daily, he said.

PS Member Susan Weerakumara (JVP) said the villagers protested against the excavation but the soil digging is carried out contravening the conditions in the permit. The Divisional Secretariat is also silent over the issue, he said.

PS Chairman U.G.Piyadasa said that the soil excavation is a disorderly manoeuvre. He said that when the permits for this type of development activities are issued, the PS is not consulted. “They do not get permission from the PS. The people have to suffer in this type of work. There is obvious public nuisance. The relevant authorities should be informed over this matter seeking remedial measures,” he said.

The PS unanimously adopted a resolution to write to the Galle District Secretary, Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Road Development Authority and the Central Environmental Authority on the issue.
