Rs.70 billion allocated for fertiliser subsidies : Herath

The Government has allocated a sum of Rs.70 billion for fertiliser subsidies for the 2020/21 Maha Season, Kurunegala District SLPP Parliamentarian Samanpriya Herath said.

He was speaking at a meeting of farmers, yesterday, at the Kuliyapitiya Agrarian Services Centre.

Accordingly, about one million paddy farmers are to get fertiliser free-of-charge, he said. However, the MP added that the subsidies would not be limited paddy farmers alone; those growing other crops would be provided with fertiliser as well.

“About 1.2 million farmers who grow other crops will get fertiliser at concessionary rates to increase their food production as well,” MP Herath said.

“Compared to last year, the demand for fertiliser has risen by 50% this year as many have taken an interest in irrigation activities as they are confident about receiving better incomes under the economic policies of the new Government led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa,” the Parliamentarian said.

“The Government has paid arrears to fertiliser companies as the previous Government had ignored settling those payments,” he said.
