More focus on Arugambay as tourist destination – Ministry Secretary

Tourism Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi said that Arugambay is unique as a tourist destination for its religious, cultural significance, wildlife locations and surfing spots.

He was addressing hoteliers, tourist officers and tourist sector stakeholders at the Pottuvil Divisional Secretariat Auditorium on Friday.

He said that the area is blessed with all natural resources. “When a master plan is prepared for the region, all these areas should be considered,” he said. “Then, one must also take into consideration that when tourism is developed, it will not affect the other sectors,” he said.

Tourism Secretary Hettiarachi and Ministry Officials were in Arugambay, Pottuvil to ascertain the situation of the area and have discussions with those in the fields. Chamber of Tourism Industry of Sri Lanka President A.M. Jaufer organised the discussion assisted by the Pottuvil Divisional Secretary. Pottuvil Predeshya Sabha Chairman M.S.Waseeth was present.

Jaufer said that the Easter Sunday attacks and the COVID-19 pandemic have paralysed the tourism sector in the area and urged the Secretary to take steps to its upliftment.

Secretary Hettiarachchi said that at a time when the whole world is affected by the COVID-19, Sri Lanka underwent the least problems. “Arugambay reported no COVID-19 positive cases. However, the Health Guidelines should be followed further,” he said..

He said that the Urban Development Authority is drawing a Master Plan for Arugambay. “Hoteliers, tourist organizations and other stakeholders should provide their ideas and support to set up the plan,” he said.

Secretary Hettiarchchi and his officials visited the areas where sea erosion has damaged hotels.

They also visited Panama where traditional food restaurant Hela Bojun is under construction at a cost of Rs.9.5 million, set apart by the Tourism Ministry.

The Secretary instructed the officials to expedite the construction and complete the project soon.

The team visited the Vocational Training Authority and presented certificates to those who completed various tourist courses.
