MC decides to pay legal fees; Mayor refuses help

A proposal to pay the legal fees for the court case against Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa Vitharana and other officials, over the alleged demolition of the Royal Court of King Buwenakabahu II, was approved with a majority of 14 votes by the Kurunegala Municipal Council at their monthly meeting, yesterday.

The proposal was forwarded by Opposition Councillor Buddhika Allepola of the United National Party (UNP).

Seventeen councillors took part in the vote; three were against the proposal. The Kurunegala Mayor thanked the councillors for their decision, but said he would pay the fees himself. He said that he would file a private case in court against those who were “attempting to tarnish his reputation”.
