Committed to achieve sustainable energy soon: Gammanpila

Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila said yesterday that every possible effort is being taken to maintain stable fuel prices in the country.

He was speaking after assuming duties at his ministry, yesterday morning. Minister Gammanpila added that he is committed to achieve energy sustainability in the country during the next five years. He said five refineries will be established in the country, and that the existing oil refinery in Sapugaskanda will be modernised during his tenure. Twenty percent of the country’s oil requirement is refined internally, while the remainder is imported, the minister said.

“We have been talking about gas and oil deposits in the Mannar basin for over 50 years. If we are able to explore them, the country would prosper,” he added. “The 2010 'Mahinda Chinthanaya' pledged that Sri Lanka would be made an energy hub of Asia, and I believe that this ministry was entrusted to me to make it a reality.” Minister Gammanpila said.
