The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is poised to form a Government with a two-thirds majority soon and there is no need to form a “National Government” SLPP Chairman Prof G.L. Peiris said yesterday.

Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, the SLPP Chairman said there is no need of forming a National Government since the party itself has secured 128 seats and another 17 seats through the National List, for total of 145 Members of Parliament.

“The SLPP would be able to form a strong Government with a two-thirds majority with the two seats of EPDP led by Douglas Devananda, one seat from TMVP led by Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, one seat secured by the SLFP in Jaffna, the seat secured by National Congress led by A.L.M. Athaullah and the seat secured by the Ape Janabala Party through the National List. So there is no need to form a National Government,” Prof. Peiris said.

He said the SLPP was extremely satisfied with the resounding victory achieved by the party at the 2020 General Election and will take up the challenge to serve the public interest.

Prof. Peiris assured that the SLPP Government will never use the two-thirds majority in an arbitrary manner and will use that mandate to continue with the development plan already implemented under the leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

“The efficient leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the success in managing the COVID-19 and measures taken by the President to curb the drug menace and underworld have laid the foundation for the unprecedented victory achieved by this three and a half year old political party,” Prof Peiris said.

The Chairman said that the new Parliament has the power to change the Constitution with a two-thirds majority. But the main concern is to repeal or modify the 19th Constitutional Amendment passed by the previous Government since the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has created a Constitution that causes a hindrance to the system of governance. “This situation has hindered the entire system of governance with no consistency and proper order,” he added.

“The United National Party suffered its worst defeat in its history and even the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has not received a mandate to play its role as a strong Opposition in Parliament. Therefore, the ruling party has also to play the role of Opposition by ruling the country through self-criticism,” Prof. Peiris said.

The SLPP Chairman stressed the importance of strengthening Parliamentary Committees such as COPE, COPA to enhance the active involvement of the Opposition.

The Tamil National Allowance also lost its monopoly since their number seats have seen a drop from 16 to 10, he noted.

“When we carefully observe the preferential votes it is very clear that the voters of this country are farsighted. So they have elected more and more young educated representatives along with experienced politicians,” he added. He further said that the SLPP is the youngest political party formed in November 2016 and special thanks should be conveyed to Basil Rajapaksa for giving leadership in structuring Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
