Cricket lover and promoter Janaka Pathirana is all out to give his best for the game of cricket over here. Kandy has established a proud record of producing some of the top most sports personalities, present and the long time secretary of the Central Province cricket Association and Kandy District cricket Association . Today some of the schools and clubs are finding it extremely difficult to keep the sport going. One reason is that there are no proper grounds. He was well supported by the CPCA president Sarath Ekanayake. Janaka Pathirana goes out of his way to keep the game of cricket active and alive at club level. He started his cricket at St. Sylvester’sCollege, under the guidance of Malcolm Perera was a seam bowler and a right hand middle order batsmen.
He is a man who goes out of his way to keep the game of cricket active and live. He was an all-rounder, and he was famous for good batting strokes. He can be seen at every cricket match let it be school or club. During his school days he was a top class athlete, in 100 and 400 metres, winning school meets and zonalmeets.
He is the man who is handling the affairs at the Pallekelle stadium, and keeping the stadium at its best. He gives a big hand when ever there is an international cricket match in Kandy. So, today great effort is needed over here for school cricket out for the ten schools only three schools have their own grounds for matches. At one time the Police grounds matting wicket, Peradeniya University grounds were available at any time with an affordable rate and schools did well and cricket flourished. Janaka is a keen follower of the game and is all out to give his best, He is a man who was involved in Cricket administration at various levels. He was one of the founder members of Kandy Youth Cricket Club and later was President of the club for over Five years. Then was the Assistant secretary of Kandy District Cricket Association, President in the years 2017and 2018 and also served on the Executive committee of Sri Lanka Cricket in year 2002/2003. Then the venue manager of Pallekelle International stadium during several Test series.
Fortunately,Janaka Pathirana has decided to bring back the game of cricket to where it was.Particularly because, unlike in the past where funding was a problem, now there are a number of corporate entities who are prepared to support cricket. And today it is managed by clubs whose committees comprise of those who have knowledge of the subject they handle and could be trusted to work in the best interest of the sport.
So,he is keen to give his best for cricket, a sport which brings people together and we need to get more support for this, get along a lot better in Kandy and cricket is a huge bonding factor. His son Sachith Pathirana who played for Trinity College and Sri Lanka is now involved in coaching.
