Royal College, Colombo confirmed their stance of playing the 76“Bradby Shield” Inter School Rugby encounter against their traditional rivals Trinity College, Kandy.

Due to the outbreak of the covid-19 Pandemic, all sporting events in the country came to a standstill including schools rugby season since last March. This most prestigious annual encounter played between two major schools in the county, undoubtedly has become the cynosure of all eyes.

Nevertheless, both Royal and Trinity are eagerly waiting for the outcome of the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA), next step of action, as to when they intend to resume the schools league which was halted in March this year due the Pandemic.

As per Royal College sources they are firm of making this annual encounter a reality whether the schools league pursue or not. Both schools have taken an unanimous decision that they are likely to have this year’s encounter happening and have tentatively scheduled to kick off either end October or early November.

“We are very much focused on this year’s encounter. We are also awaiting to see the outcome of the SLSRFA decision as to what is their plan of resuming the schools league tournament. Right now, we hear various statements made by them. But both Royal and Trinity joint committee have decided to have this year’s encounter either by the end of the October or early November, irrespective of outcome of the schools League.” Said Rajiv Malalasekere, Chairman, Royal Rugby advisory committee.

When we inquired whether they will continue their participation, if they resume the schools league, he replied that “Definitely yes. Royal will continue their presence in the tournament as far as it doesn’t clash with the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination.”
