Easter Sunday attacks probe:

AG returns another 38 incomplete files

Attorney General Dappula De Livera returned a further 38 incomplete investigation files to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) regarding suspects arrested in connection with the Easter Sunday bomb attacks April 21, 2019.

The AG had returned 40 investigation files to the Acting IGP on June 26, accordingly, the total number of files returned is 78.

Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told the news media that the AG has directed the Acting IGP to properly conclude the investigations of the incomplete files.

State Counsel Jayaratne said that multiple police stations had arrested over 200 suspects in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks and Police had directed investigations files regarding each suspect to the Attorney General’s Department to take legal action against them.

“However, some investigation files were incomplete and legal action could not be taken based on these incomplete files,” she said.

Accordingly, the Attorney General took steps to return the incomplete investigation files to the Acting IGP and instructed the Acting IGP to ensure full conclusion of the investigations and submit those reports to the Attorney General’s Department.
