285 Lankans to be repatriated from Saudi Arabia

A group of 18 expectant mothers will be among the 285 stranded Sri Lankans, who are expected to arrive in Colombo from Saudi Arabia today (Tuesday), Charge de Affaires of the Sri Lankan embassy in Riyadh Madhuka Wickramarachchi told the Daily News over the phone here on Monday.

Riyadh has chosen 285 applicants from among a group of 1000 Sri Lankans who have expressed their interest to return to their homeland.

The mission has given priority to the business travellers to the Kingdom who were stranded in Riyadh due to the lockdown in Colombo, inmates from the deportation camps, pregnant mothers and others who are sick.

The Saudi Arabian government would pay the airfare of the inmates of the deportation camps and also has agreed to waive off the fines on people who have overstayed their visit visas to the Kingdom.

A SriLankan Airlines special charter flight No UL 266 was scheduled to take off from the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh last night (June 6).

The Sri Lankan Airlines flight from Colombo will not carry any passengers to Riyadh when it goes to ferry the stranded passengers.

The passengers who are scheduled to travel by the flight should have successfully undergone PCR tests in Saudi Arabia within 72 hours of the journey and should carry a medical report to certify that he or she is free from the virus.

On arrival in Colombo, the passengers will be asked to undergo another PCR test at the Bandaranaike International Airport and they will be directed to hotel or government quarantine camps according to the choice of the passengers.

Those who opt to quarantine themselves in a hotel should pay Rs 7,500 per person on full board basis, while the others will be accommodated at the government camps for two weeks, where they will be provided free board and lodging. Those who test positive for the virus will be sent to the nearest government hospital for necessary treatment.
