Life imprisonment most appropriate punishment for drug offences - G.L.

Life imprisonment must be proclaimed as the most appropriate, minimum punishment for underworld and drug related offences, said Prof. G.L Peiris.

He also said that there is no option other than life imprisonment for those who are convicted by a court for underworld and drug related offences.

He was speaking at a press conference at the SLPP headquarters yesterday (7).

“New laws will be formulated to terminate the uncontrollable flow of money from overseas, illegal drugs and underworld crime. The government will give priority to formulate these laws just after the General Election,” Peiris said.

He said steps would be taken to strengthen the existing extradition treaties and exchange of information processes with foreign countries and thereby take legal action against Sri Lankan and foreign drug and underworld kingpins who have connections with drug traffickers in Sri Lanka and currently living abroad.

Prof. Peiris said that a system must be formulated to terminate the uncontrollable illegal flow of money from overseas and money should only reach our country through the Treasury and must be regularized.

Prof. Peiris also said that steps will be taken to improve bank supervision so that drug traffickers who open bank accounts through substitutes can be tracked.
