One of the biggest religious Chariot festivals held at the Nagadeepa Hindu temple ended yesterday abiding by all Health Ministry guidelines to ensure the safety of those devotees attending the festival, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to festival sources, many devotees weren’t allowed to participate in the festival this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with only the devotees from the nearby areas allowed.

The devotees and priests wore masks and maintained social distancing while conducting the rituals.

The 10-day festival was conducted in a very sombre manner due to the current situation ensuring the safety of the people at the festival. Many devotees who usually offer free meals to the needy had to refrain from doing so this year, in order to avoid large gatherings during meal distribution.

The Navy and Police were very vigilant in ensuring that no devotees from the Jaffna mainland were allowed at the festival.
