New PNB Director

The National Police Commission (NPC) has approved the appointment of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sujith Wedamulla as the new Director of the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB). Accordingly, the transfer of the former PNB Director SSP Manjula Senarath was also approved.

This is the second transfer to take place with regard to the PNB.

Speaking to the Daily News, Police Media Spokesman SaSP Jaliya Senaratne said that previously, based on the request made by the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickremeratne, the National Police Commission approved the transfer of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) S. C. Medawatte to the Police Welfare Division. DIG G.K.J. Aponso was appointed as the head of the PNB.

According to the Police Media Spokesman, the transfers were made to ensure there is no interference or hindrance to the ongoing investigations regarding the involvement of several PNB officers with drug racketeers. So far 15, PNB officers have been detained by the Criminal Investigations Department to be interrogated on suspected links to drug lords together with three civilians. Among the Police personnel who were arrested are an Inspector of Police, two Sub-Inspectors, five sergeants, and seven Constables.
