Peradeniya enters World University Rankings

The University of Peradeniya has been included for the first time in the prestigious The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, with a ranking between 401-500. The Rankings include 1,400 universities in 92 countries.

The rankings, released yesterday, placed the University of Colombo at 1,001, which was last year in the 801-1000 category. These are the only two Sri Lankan universities in the list, which placed the University of Oxford, UK at the number one position.

The Rankings noted that international students comprised just one percent of the student populations of both universities (Peradeniya 17,482 and Colombo 22,322), whereas Oxford, with an almost equal number of students to Colombo, has a foreign student population of 41 percent. Foreign students have become a vital source of income and prestige for global universities.

The 2020 ranking includes 56 universities from India, 16 universities from Malaysia, 13 universities from Thailand, six universities from Indonesia, and two from Singapore, with a mixture of both private and State universities.

The top 10 universities in the world in order of ranking are Oxford, UK, California Institute of Technology, US, Cambridge, UK, Stanford, US, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, Princeton US, Harvard, US, Yale, US, Chicago, US, and Imperial College, London, UK.
