High level meet to address plight of failed finance company depositors

The PM, the Treasury and the Central Bank will explore ways to provide relief to depositors of collapsed finance companies next week.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Treasury Secretary and the Central Bank’s Non-Bank Financial Institutions Supervision Department officials are scheduled to meet next week to look explore ways to provide relief to depositors of collapsed finance companies, Co-cabinet spokesman, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane said.

Minister Gunawardane further said that as instructed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President’s Secretary Dr.P B Jaysundera had called for a report from the Central Bank on the issue of the plight of depositors of collapsed financial institutions and that report was handed over to the Cabinet of Ministers by Central Bank Governor Prof.W.D. Lakshman.

“The report had said that it is not possible to intervene in the issue since some of the depositors had filed court cases. But considering difficulties face by those depositors, President Gotabaya had instructed them to some how find out a way to provide relief for them,” he added.
