Minister Thondaman's funeral to be held on Sunday

The funeral rites of Leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and Community Empowerment and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman will be held on Sunday at Norwood Grounds in Hatton.

Minister Thondaman passed away on admission to Thalangama base hospital on Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack.

His remains lie at his private residence in Battaramulla and will be placed at the Parliament Complex today to pay last respects. His remains will be kept Lying-in-State in the Assembly Hall of Parliament from 10.45 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. today.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, ministers and former Parliamentarians including former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, foreign diplomats, Parliamentary Staff, and officials from Departments and institutes affiliated to Parliament will pay their last respects to the late Minister Thondaman at the Parliament Premises.

Thondaman, who first entered Parliament in 1994, served as a Minister under both the UNP and the UPFA administrations. He was to contest the General Election this year. He had signed the nomination papers to contest from the SLPP from the Nuwara Eliya district.

His 56th birth anniversary falls tomorrow. He was the grandson of CWC founder and prominent trade unionist the late Saumyamoorthi Thondaman.
