No imports of vehicles and luxury goods

The Government has taken measures to ban the import of motor vehicles and luxury goods, said Co-cabinet Spokesman, Higher Education, Technology, Innovation and Information and Media Minister Dr Bandula Gunawardena.

Briefing the media yesterday at the Government Information Department, Dr Gunawardena said the respective gazette notification had been presented to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and there will be no restrictions on the import of essential goods to the country.

Dr Gunawardena said that the importers are advised to speak with their suppliers to discuss credit terms for a period of 180 days with regard to importing non-essential items such as construction materials required by consumers at large.

He said that the Covid-19 pandemic has shaken the entire world and life and this is the biggest crisis experienced in post-independence Sri Lanka. So it is important to have a proper management in country’s economy to overcome this crisis which is not an easy task.

The Minister said a committee headed by the Treasury Secretary is scheduled to be appointed to look in to the issues faced by importers and any issue related to the import of goods could be directed to this committee.
