1,000 more PCR tests daily

The government has decided to increase Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests for detecting COVID-19 tests by another 1,000 daily in coordination with the university medical faculties.

This was decided upon during a during a discussion held today among Health Sector heads, University Vice Chancellors and Medical Faculty deans headed by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees to seek the possibility of conducting PCR Tests at Universities. All State Universities in Sri Lanka have their own latest PCR equipment for teaching and laboratory research purposes.

Hence the PCR tests are to be conducted additionally at Colombo University, Sri Jayawardenapura University, Peradeniya University, Kelaniya University and Batticaloa University medical faculties and Science Faculty laboratories in coordination with the Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Ministry and Health Ministry.

Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Minister Bandula Gunawardena, and Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi too participated the discussion. They both stressed the need to ramp up testing for COVID-19, given the recent developments locally and globally.

In the meantime the staff members of the Presidential Task Force on Supplying Essential Goods and Presidential Task Force on Economic Revival and Poverty Eradication operation centers have also been directed to seek medical tests for COVID-19.

So far none of them has tested positive. However they are directed for the tests for COVID 19 as these Presidential Task Forces are in operation at Temple Trees Premises round the clock.

The health condition of those staff members are monitored on a regular basis as they are coordinating operations across the country to provide relief to the public.
