Winds damage 1,000 houses in Puttalam

Disaster Management Centre Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said that 3500 individuals of 1202 families in Puttalam district have been affected by strong winds last Wednesday evening (15).

According to the DMC, six divisional secretariat divisions in Puttalam district have been affected by the strong winds and 1083 houses have been fully damaged. The Government has allotted over Rs. 5.2 million to compensate the affected families, the DMC spokesperson pointed out.

Kodippili also said that around 125 small and medium scale enterprises have also been severely affected by the weather condition.

DMC also stated that 197 houses in Karuwalagaswewa, 492 in Nawagaththegama, 377 in Anamaduwa, 16 in Wanathawilluwa, two in Puttalam and two houses in Mahakumbukkadawala have been affected by the gusty winds.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department announced that showers or thundershowers will occur over the most places of the island after 2.00 p.m. on Friday (17).  “Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places (particularly in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces). Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning.” it also said. “The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity and localized strong winds during thundershowers.” the Department added.
