Pledges to uphold judicial ethics

Newly appointed Supreme Court Judge Yasantha Kodagoda PC yesterday pledged to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law, abide by judicial ethics and respect traditions of the country’s judicial system and those of the legal profession.

Justice Yasantha Kodagoda made this remark while speaking at the ceremonial sitting held at the Supreme Court to welcome him as a Supreme Court Judge.

“I will serve our country by adjudicating the resolution of disputes independently, impartially, neutrally,

fearlessly and of course in terms of the law,” Justice Kodagoda said.

In his speech, Justice Kodagoda emphasised the necessity of human and material resources for the administration of justice.

“The efficacy of any system of justice is founded upon many factors, including the resources available for the justice system. These resources are manifold and can be classified into two groups namely human and material resources on the one hand and legislative infrastructure on the other,” Justice Kodagoda further added.

The ceremony began with the speeches of Attorney General Dappula de Livera PC and BASL President Kalinga Indatissa PC. Attorney General Dappula de Livera predicted that the entry of Justice Kodagoda to the Supreme Court would strengthen the quality of justice and the rule of law in the country.

In his speech, BASL President Kalinga Indatissa PC appreciated the 30 years of yeoman service provided by Justice Kodagoda at the Attorney General’s Department and his service as a Court of Appeal (President) Judge since last year.
