Three suspects arrested with 170kg of Kerala cannabis

Three suspects transporting 170 kilograms of Kerala cannabis hidden inside the false bottom of a private bus plying from Jaffna to Colombo, were arrested by the officers of the Police Anti-Narcotics Bureau on January 22.

The arrest was made after halting the bus at Palaviya, in Puttalam, following a tip-off from naval intelligence officers.

Head of the Police Anti-Narcotics Bureau, DIG Sanjeewa Medawatta, said that investigations revealed the private bus, which belongs to a resident in Jaffna, is not usually used for normal passenger transport services, and that the false bottom had been built for the sole purpose of transporting cannabis and other narcotics.

Interrogations revealed that that the suspects are paid Rs.50,000 each for each drug parcel they transport to Colombo. They would have earned a total of Rs.8.5 million for transporting the entire consignment of cannabis that day.

The suspects have been identified as residents of Jaffna, Kodikaman, and Kilinochchi. They have so far been involved in the illegal transport of Kerala cannabis and other drugs smuggled from India.
