Glossy hair guide to gorgeous locks

Everyone wants locks that glisten with light. It is the stuff of dreams. We all vie for glossy, gorgeous locks and with a little TLC you can achieve the tresses that you have been dreaming about. No matter what your hair texture is, you can have healthy-looking hair by following our shiny hair secrets.

Define keratin treatment

A keratin treatment is a chemical process that smoothes and shines frizzy hair. The results of this treatment can last up to six months with homecare products.

Keratin treatment procedure

Keratin is a smoothing treatment that seals the hair cuticle with a coating of protein that eliminates frizz, and adds softness and shine. The process can take anywhere between one hour to three hours depending on the hair type, length, and fullness.

Keratin treatment for coloured hair

If you do a keratin treatment before colouring your hair, you will have the opposite effect. Keratin protects your hair, which gives it a high shine and smooth feel. Unfortunately, it also stops colour from penetrating into your hair.

So, colouring + keratin treatment = impressive vibrant locks.

But keratin treatment + coloring = patchy, uneven colour.

Volume and texture

By following a keratin treatment, your hair will have a much smoother, straighter appearance and reduced volume. The frizz is eliminated from your hair for up to three months. The curly hair will retain its natural curls but they will be softer, frizz-free and easier to control.

Washing your hair

Wait two to three days before washing you hair after the treatment. That's generally the amount of time it takes the keratin to penetrate and really start working on your hair. Wash your hair any sooner, and you'll lose the effect of the treatment, so as tempted as you may be to wash your hair after two days, wait just a little bit longer.

Keratin treatment for everyone

Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, and although the amount of formaldehyde released in a keratin treatment is small, you should avoid it. It’s much better to seek formaldehyde-free treatments. They are not as brilliantly effective and long-lasting as the formaldehyde formulas, but they are much safer. However, keratin treatments are not recommended for women who are pregnant.

Selecting products to use

Once your treatment is complete the stylist will give you or recommend the correct shampoo and conditioner to use after the treatment.

Brazilian keratin treatments

Most keratin treatments include hydrolysed Keratin proteins, which fuse with our hair’s natural keratin when heated. Known as the ‘sealing process’, this happens when the hair is infused with a keratin treatment, dried and flat-ironed.

Depleted keratin can make hair look dull and frizzy in appearance, and can be extremely brittle and prone to split ends. Replacing the keratin will help rebuild the cortex of the hair, giving it strength and a shiny appearance. The latest Brazilian keratin treatments also include low pH amino acids, straighten the hair as well as rebuild it to enviable strength which is, of course, great for anyone looking to grow their hair.

Tips to follow after the keratin treatment

* To maximize the treatment's benefits, we recommend using the either Moisture Enhance or Volume Enhance Shampoo and Conditioner, which deliver a gorgeously luxurious shampoo experience.

*KeraStraight Moisture Mask can be used once a week as an extra hydrating treat to keep hair hydrated and soft. ]

* Weaker and finer hair will benefit from the Protein Mask which continues to strengthen and repair hair, delivering incredible softness and shine.

*The key to maintaining your keratin treatment for longer is to wash your hair less. I know this may feel gross, but you can get by with dry shampoos easily. Honestly, it's the best way to keep your hair clean and refreshed without using water. Spray dry shampoo on your roots twice daily on the days that you skip washing.
