Any accused will be punished as per the law of the country and new rules will not be formulated in this regard, Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation, and Rural Development Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the renovation of the Badagiriya tank and other tanks in the area under the 2020 Vari Saubhagaya programme yesterday (12) in Badagiriya, Hambantota.

The government will not protect criminals or wrongdoers. It does not matter if the accused is a politician, official or an ordinary person, the rule of the country will be equally dealt with everyone, the Minister said.

He said the citizens can complain against the wrongdoers to relevant institutions without hindrance. “No complain will be disregarded by them. They will investigate them properly and transparently and those who accused will be punished in accordance with the law,” the Minister said.

He said that price of rice has posed a severe issue. “Sathosa outlets sell rice at low prices. The Paddy Marketing Board provides rice to Sathosa. However, some supermarkets sell rice at prices lower than the prices of Sathosa. I will take steps to provide rice at low prices to the public,” the Minister said.

The Minister said youth are now cultivating barren paddy fields. “My ministry will encourage and support them in every way we can. They must use carbonic manure in their paddy fields. We have been recognized as a main country that produce food items unsuitable for human consumption. We have come to this position since our farmers use chemicals excessively in their cultivation,” the Minister said.
