Restrictions on dual-purpose mini-trucks temporarily lifted

The government has instructed the police to temporarily suspend the restrictions pertaining to dual-purpose mini-trucks with an engine capacity less than 1000cc, as well as motorcycles of 49cc engine capacity.

Information and Communication Technology State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told the Daily News that laws had been enacted with regard to the canopy fixed to the said type of mini-trucks, while helmets had been made compulsory for those riding 49cc motorcycles.

But it seems the public is unaware of these laws, he added.

Abeywardena said that President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has instructed all police stations through the acting IGP, to re-implement the law after giving a reasonable period for the public to comprehend it.

The Acting Motor Traffic Commissioner has also been informed of the decision, he added.

The state minister said that the said mini-trucks and motorcycles are mostly used by the small-scale entrepreneurs during festive seasons.

Therefore, he said that the police should not inconvenience people who use these vehicles during this festive season, and to release people who have been arrested over the issue after informing their respective courts.
