Lanka increase gold medals tally to 36 to remain third

Sri Lanka increased their gold medals tally to 36 and continued to hold onto third place behind India and host Nepal on the eighth day of the 13th South Asian Games in Kathmandu yesterday.

They won gold medals in judo and beach volleyball (men and women).

Judo

Chamara Dharmawardene bagged the gold medal in the men’s 73kg category and two silver and three bronze medals in the judo competition at the Army Physical Fitness Centre in Lagankhen, Kathmandu.

Olympian Dharmawardene beat Nepal’s Sanjit Dangol in the men’s 73kg lightweight after his opponent had made an early assault. But Dharmawardene tactfully retaliated to see him off and win the gold medal in style.

The two silver medals came from Buddhika Premaratne and Chamila Dilani while Shalini Liyanage, Yameena Rifaz and Lakshika Maduwanthi bagged the three bronze medals.

Swimming

Sri Lanka added four silvers and a bronze medal to their tally in the swimming competition which was held at the International Sports Complex in Satdobato, Kathmandu.

Akalanka Peiris, Sandev Senaratne, and the men’s and women’s relay teams competing in the 4x200m event won silver medals while Ramudi Samarakoon bagged the solitary bronze medal for the day.

Peiris won the silver medal in the Men’s 50m Backstroke event, to better his own Sri Lanka record of 26.33 seconds set at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina last year. Senaratne won a silver medal in the Men’s 200m Butterfly event.

The Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team, comprising Stephan Perera, Matthew Abeysinghe, Dilanka Shehan and Kavin Weerasinghe bagged the third silver medal for Sri Lanka.

The team consisting Ramudi Samarakoon, Sandu Savindi, Bhakthi Karunasena and Ganga Seneviratne won the fourth silver medal in the Women’s 2x200m Freestyle Relay event.

The only bronze medal on Monday was won by Ramudi Samarakoon, who contested in the Women’s 400m Freestyle event.

Beach Volleyball

Both men`s and women`s teams won the gold and silver medals as they competed in the all Sri Lanka final in both categories.

Cricket

The Sri Lanka women’s cricket team had to settle for silver after losing to Bangladesh by two runs in a nail-biting final. Nepal Women won the bronze.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka men’s under 23 team recorded their fourth win to enter the final. They beat Bangladesh by nine wickets in the final first round match.

Sri Lanka will play Bangladesh again in the final for the gold today.

Archery

The Sri Lanka men`s archery team won the silver medal in the men`s re-curve event.

Tennis

Anika Seneviratne took the bronze medal in the women`s singles event.

Fencing

Sri Lanka won three bronze medals at fencing in the Men’s Fencing Team – Sabre, the Men’s Fencing Team – Epee and the Women’s Fencing Team – Foil.

State Minister arrives for closing ceremony

State Minister of Youth Affairs Duminda Dissanayake arrived yesterday to participate in the closing ceremony of the South Asian Games which will be on Tuesday.

Soon after arrival the Minister visited the hospital to inquire on the athletes affected by dengue.

The Minister said the athletes who are being treated at a hospital in Kathmandu that they were recovering well and assured their parents that they will be taken care of by the Ministry.

NOC president Suresh Subramaniam said that when he got to know of the athletes’ sickness through chef de mission Dampath Fernando he had contacted the official health partner of NOCSL and through them got a specialist doctor Ananda Wijeyawickrama to attend to the sick athletes. He said that he was happy to note that the athletes were recovering well.
