Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake has informed the Election Commission that there is a vacancy in the 8th Parliament since December 4 due to the demise of Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Ranjith Soyza, a statement issued by the Parliamentary Communication Department said yesterday.
The Secretary General of Parliament informed Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya that this notification is being made in terms of Section 64 (1) of the Parliament Act No 01 of 1981.
According to the Parliamentary Act, the Election Commission will obtain information about the next candidate from the UPFA preferential list from the Ratnapura District Returning Officer. The Election Commission will then publish the same in a Gazette notification.
