Thundershowers, severe lightning – Met. Dept.


The Meteorology Department has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning is likely to occur at several places in the island during the evening or night, particularly in the Western, sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-Western provinces.

Temporarily strong gusty winds up to 70-80 kmph is also possible during thundershowers, the Met Department warned.

Therefore, as a precautionary measure the Department of Meteorology advises that people should Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees during such thundershowers and heavy lightening.

People are advised to avoid being in the open such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during such thundershowers. The Met Department also warned the public to refrain from using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunder storms.

"Further, using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc. should also be avoided and people are advised to be cautious of falling trees and power lines during thunderstorms," the Met Department stated.
