Sarath Fonseka will ensure country’s defence – UNP MP Wijesiri

With NDF Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa’s request for Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to head defence and national security, the people of this country again have a hope of living without fear and suspicion, UNP MP Chaminda Wijesiri told news media yesterday.

“We are thankful to Sajith Premadasa for fulfilling the expectations of the people in promising the Defence portfolio to Sarath Fonseka, the former Army Commander,” he told a press conference yesterday at the NDF Presidential candidate’s election office at Vauxhall Street. Colombo.

Wijesiri said that the UNP was committed to destroying all forms of terrorism in the country. Therefore, it is Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who has the experience in the battlefield and had completed the task of winning the 30-year-old war.

He will have to work out plans and strategies to combat terrorism using his extensive experience in fighting the 30-year terrorist war,” he said.

“We urged President Maithripala Sirisena to appoint Sarath Fonseka as the Defence Minister to ensure the country’s security following the Easter Sunday terror attacks. But,the President was subjected to pressures by various people at that time and he did not carry out the appointment.

However, if there were any doubts regarding our security, all those will be eliminated after Sarath Fonseka is appointed as a new Defense Minister.

During the war, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his family left the country and obtained US citizenship. He came back only after his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa became President. He has apparently renounced his US citizenship,” MP Wijesiri said.“These are the people who allegedly nourished the terrorist leader Zahran during the previous regime. But they shout now that there is no security in the country. They also used Madumadava Aravinda to allegedly spread hatred against Muslims,” he said.
